Parkland Student Athlete Academy

The Parkland Student Athlete Academy (PSAA) is a program for Grades 6-9 that provides student athletes in pursuit of high performance with technical, theoretical and experiential opportunities, while keeping them engaged in a rich and complete school community focused on academic achievement. Our aim is to provide local, high quality affordable options for unique high performance sport programming.

This program is a collaboration between Parkland School Division and a number of community partners who offer high quality athletic development in their given sport. This program fosters a long-term approach to high performance athletic development, centered around the physical, mental, emotional and cognitive improvement of the student athletes.

More Information

Further details about the Parkland Student Athlete Academy will be added to the Connections For Learning site as they become available. You may also wish to check out our Frequently Asked Questions and Pillars of the Program pages, or contact Connections For Learning using the methods below.

Sports Offered

The Parkland Student Athlete Academy will be offering the following high performance sports specializations in collaboration with community partners for the 2020-2021 school year. For full details, follow the links to view each sport's page.

There are a number of logistical factors and limitations that must be considered when creating a new program such as this, which include:

  • Ensuring there is sufficient staffing, classroom space, resources and materials
  • Finding a quality organization in our community that specializes in the sport and is willing to partner with the program
  • Having enough student athletes choosing to specialize in the sports on offer in order to make each one of them sustainable
  • Gaining access to adequate local facilities and equipment appropriate for the sport

All of these factors must align in order for us to be able to offer a specific sport in the Parkland Student Athlete Academy. We are currently working out these logistics with our community partners and local sports facilities to ensure the viability of every sports program we have on offer. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

Our goal is to add additional sports programming options in the 2021-2022 school year.

Participating Grades

Year 1 of the Academy will be open to students in Grades 6-9. We intend to expand the program to accommodate high school students in 2021-2022. Under certain circumstances, we may be able to make special arrangements to accommodate students not in this age range - please contact Connections for Learning to discuss the possibilities.

Program Location

For 2020-2021, the academic portion of the program will be offered at École Broxton Park School in Spruce Grove.

Registration

There are three steps to the Academy registration process.

Step 1: Parkland School Division Registration

Complete a Parkland School Division Registration Form, and select Parkland Student Athlete Academy as your program of choice.

Please Note: Choosing the Parkland Student Athlete Academy on the PSD Registration Form indicates that the student wishes to apply for the program - it does not guarantee the student's acceptance into the program. Program acceptance may only occur after completing the remaining steps of the registration process.

Step 2: Application Survey

After submitting a PSD Registration form, each applicant will receive an email with the Academy Application Survey. Complete the survey and select the sport(s) in which the student wishes to specialize. The student must provide a recent report card to ensure their ability to meet the academic requirements of the program.

Application surveys will be reviewed by community partners and Connections for Learning to confirm the student has met both the athletic and academic requirements for entrance into the program, and ensure that there is space available to accommodate their grade level and chosen sport(s).

Step 3: Intake Interview

Connections For Learning will contact each applicant to discuss their responsibilities in and readiness for the program, making sure that the program is a good fit for them. Assuming they have met all entrance requirements, students will then receive confirmation of their acceptance into the program.

If you have any questions regarding the process, you can contact Connections for Learning.
