Builder Chosen for New K-9 School in Spruce Grove

January 17, 2017 - Parkland School Division is excited to announce they are one step closer to the opening of another new Kindergarten to Grade 9 School in the City of Spruce Grove. This pending school was originally announced by the Government of Alberta on October 8, 2014 as part of their 3-phase consolidated advancement of educational capital projects.

The new school will be built in Spruce Grove’s west end close to where Grove Drive currently ends and the new Copperhaven neighbourhood development continues.  The construction contract for that school has been awarded by government to United Construction Company Inc. with construction work slated to begin in the spring of 2017.

"A top priority of our government is to invest in building and modernizing the schools our students need to ensure their success, stated Alberta's Minister of Infrastructure Brian Mason.

“This new K-9 school will be a place where our young people will have the resources and the space they need to learn, explore, discover and grow. The project will help build strong Spruce Grove area families and communities for many years to come."

"Parkland School Division has just had a taste of right-sized schools since the opening of Prescott Learning Centre," explained Board Chair Eric Cameron.

"We’ve been in a space crunch for such a long time so we’re excited to see what it looks like when we maximize the flexibility of our existing learning spaces and really use parts of our buildings for their intended purposes. We were thrilled with the opening of Prescott Learning Centre and have had the same opportunity in concept in design to create another fantastic 21st century learning facility. Students will be able to learn about alternative energy solutions by studying their own facility that will be used as a prototype for future schools with new and innovative designs that focus on green initiatives including an impressive solar panel application.”

"United Construction Company is a client-focused full service general contractor and construction manager, serving large and small scale commercial, light industrial and multi-family residential construction projects,” explained company Vice President Frank Santoro.

“We were founded on the principles of transparency, honesty and integrity; our valued customers are the cornerstone of our company’s success and as such, every effort is given to ensure our customer’s satisfaction. Through a proactive and collaborative approach, we deliver on our promises and we look forward to the collaboration that will happen with our new partners in Parkland School Division and Alberta Infrastructure.”

"We look forward to working with government and United Construction Company to produce a much needed venue to complete the transition in the City of Spruce Grove," stated Parkland School Division Superintendent Tim Monds.

"This will equip us with the facilities and infrastructure required to service one of the fastest growing populations in the province. We also look forward to building a new relationship with another local business in United whose company is built on innovation, culture and transparency.  Those are all qualities and concepts you’ll find in PSD’s values and beliefs.”

Educating close to 11,000 students and serving over 73,000 residents in an area of over 3,995 square kilometers, Parkland School Division operates 23 schools in addition to a number of alternate outreach sites located in the communities of Spruce Grove, Stony Plain and Parkland County.
