Board Meeting Highlights - June 9, 2015
The Board of Trustees is pleased to share with all education stakeholders the highlights of our recent Board meeting held on Tuesday, June 9, 2015. The adopted minutes will be available on our website following the next Regular Board meeting.
Board Chair Eric Cameron and Superintendent Tim Monds also presented the recent Name the School contest winner Nel Ouwen with the grand prize for submitting Prescott Learning Centre as the name for Parkland School Division's new school scheduled to open in the fall of 2016.
The Board welcomed as a delegation Grade 3 Team Teachers Kyla Ward and Cherie Lovsund along with students Miya Esak, Paige Eastwood, Makayla Palmer, Carter Davidson and Gabriella Miller. They shared some of their real-life learning in a Team Teaching Environment. The presentation covered topics from a science unit on rocks and minerals, a social studies unit on travel and world trade, literacy and numeracy work being done. There was also a sneak peak into the MicroSociety that’s coming to Parkland Village School next year.
The Board approved the Strategic Facilities Plan with recommended additions and corrections as presented by Hugh Skinner of HS Facilities Planning. The 10-year plan includes an analysis of enrolment, capacity and utilization; facility condition assessment; Division Mission, Vision and Priority Areas; observations; and conclusions and recommendations.
The Board approved the monthly financial report for the period ending May 31, 2015. The year-to-date deficit from operations is $334,483 which is tracking toward the 2014-15 revised budget operating deficit of $419,518.
The Board received as information the Accountability Pillar Results Report. Accountability Pillar surveys are administered annually during the months of January to March. Students and teachers complete the surveys online while parents receive a copy of the survey by mail. Parkland School Division staff, students and parents report high levels of satisfaction for quality of education students are receiving in safe and caring learning environments. Parkland School Division achieved growth from the previous year on the following measures:
- Education Quality
- Lifelong Learning
- Work Preparation
- High School Completion
- Post-Secondary Transition
- Diploma Participation
- Rutherford Scholarship Eligibility

Next special Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at 9:30am, Centre for Education
Next Regular Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at 6:30pm, Centre for Education.
Note: The September 8 Regular Board meeting will be preceeded by the Board's Organization Meeting for the 2015-2016 school year.
